"Were you raised in a barn?"
- American idiom meaning "shut the door"
A barn is a classic farm building used for sheltering animals or items. Barn types may be named for their purpose; for example, a dairy barn is used for milking cows and a tobacco barn is used for drying tobacco after it is harvested. Others have specific names, like stable or shed.
Traditionally, the bottom portion of a barn housed animals and the top stored hay. Also it was mainly built from wood, just like a log cabin. Today, however, barns have been adapted to other purposes. Some are houses and others are used as rustic venues for events such as weddings.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Barn
How to Draw a Great Looking Barn for Kids, Beginners, and Adults - Step 1
1. Begin by drawing four straight lines, connected as if forming a pentagon with no bottom side. Then, draw a second set of four lines parallel to the first. Connect the outermost lines to one another using short, straight lines. This forms the front edge of the barn's roof.

6. Draw three rectangles of different sizes along the broad side of the barn. These will become the barn's windows.

7. Draw two parallel, straight, horizontal lines between the eaves of the roof. This indicates the bottom of the loft, or the second story of the barn. Above these lines, draw a rectangle. Section the rectangle into three using straight lines. In the left and right rectangles, draw additional smaller rectangles, forming the shutters. Draw a line across the top of the central rectangle, forming the frame around the loft opening.

8. Draw a large vertical rectangle across the front of the barn. Outline the top and sides with parallel lines, framing the door. Then, draw a set of vertical parallel lines down the middle of the rectangle, dividing the door in two halves.

9. Add the finishing touches to your barn. Draw parallel horizontal lines across the barn's door, dividing it once again. Then, use pairs of straight lines to draw "X" shapes across these lower doors and across the barn's windows.
Color Your Barn Drawing
Color your cartoon barn. Most barns are red, but some are black, green, or other colors.
Did you know? Red remains a traditional color for barns in honor of tradition. Before commercial paint was readily available, farmers sealed barn wood with a mixture of orange linseed oil and rust, which turned the mixture red. The oil protected the wood from the weather, and the rust helped stave off moss and fungi. When painting became available, many farmers stuck with this signature color.
Next, enhance your farm picture with animals such as cows, horses, pigs, and dogs, as well as scarecrows and tractors.
